This found-object assemblage features a poem by Robert Louis Stevenson about the value of books and reading. The full text serves as a backdrop printed on vintage paper, and in the foreground is a collection of miniature books. Each is made from pages from an early-1900s novel and is leather-bound. You'll also spot a goose feather, a vintage bauble, and chandelier crystals. As an added feature, an antique stereoscope photograph showing a group of young girls reading helps set the tone. If you look closely, you'll notice their mischievous brother holding a mouse above their heads. He's up to no good, but they are intent on enjoying their storybook.
Yes, the assemblage is lit up by a string of tiny lights (2 CR2032 batteries included). The switch and battery compartment are stored in a leather pouch on the back of the assemblage for easy battery replacement.
The assemblage measures 4.75" x 15" x 3.5", and it is designed to be displayed on a bookshelf or table with your other treasures.
NOTE: while the small books are secured with high-powered glue that will last for years to come, the piece in general is still delicate and should be handled with care.
The poem reads as follows:
Happy Chimney Corner Days
By Robert Louis Stevenson
Summer fading, winter comes –
Frosty mornings, tingling thumbs
Window robins, winter rooks,
And the picture story-books.
Water now is turned to stone
Nurse and I can walk upon;
Still we find the flowing brooks
In the picture story-books.
All the pretty things put by,
Wait upon the children’s eye,
Sheep and shepherds, trees and crooks,
In the picture story-books.
We may see how all things are,
Seas and cities, near and far,
And the flying fairies’ looks,
In the picture story-books.
How am I to sing your praise,
Happy chimney-corner days,
Sitting safe in nursery nooks,
Reading picture story-books

MY ARTIST STATEMENT—Painting is a daily ritual for me, as I continue to discover ways to express myself through art. My goal is to create artwork that represents how I see the world around me—or how I hope it could be, a place where mercy, benevolence, and peace are commonplace and can be found around any corner, under any tree, or beside any stream. At the same time, I desire to create meaningful work that others forge a deep connection to and bring into their own home as a unique expression of who they are.
